The way that scalloped border is made is by including a very narrow strip of paper backing onto the edge of the bed linen itself to guide the seamstress who is making the item. These are all hand cut and then sewn with a special overlock. It is a very labour intensive process.  The paper is then removed from the outside and inside of the embroidered overlock but a very small amount of it is retained within the embroidery.\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you first start washing your bedlinen, you may see the small amount of backing paper working its way out through the embroidery as the paper disintegrates and dissolves. This is a normal characteristic of the bedlinen and is not a defect or the disintegration of the scalloped stitching but the paper. It is often accentuated with coloured scalloped edges. After several washes, this will disappear.
