A Guide to Our Modular Sofas

A Guide to Our Modular Sofas

A modular sofa works a little differently from a traditional sofa. It is made from separate pieces that connect together, allowing you to build the shape that works best for your home.

Add another seat and your sofa becomes a little longer. Introduce a corner and it gently wraps around the room. Include a chaise and suddenly there is somewhere everyone wants to stretch out.

The beauty is that you are not choosing from a handful of standard sizes. You are creating a sofa that feels made for your space.

Why choose a modular sofa?

One of the biggest advantages is flexibility.

A modular sofa can be built around your room rather than asking your room to fit around it. It works beautifully beneath long windows, in awkward alcoves, or along walls where standard sofa sizes never seem quite right.

It can also grow with you. Many people begin with a smaller arrangement and simply add another section later as their family grows, they move house or their needs change.

There is a practical benefit too. Because each piece arrives separately, modular sofas are often much easier to carry through narrow hallways, staircases and older cottages than one large sofa frame.

The pieces that make it all work

Every modular sofa begins with the same collection of pieces, each designed to work beautifully together.

Single seats allow you to extend your sofa one seat at a time. Larger 2, 2.5 and 3 seater sections create longer runs while keeping everything perfectly balanced.

Then come the pieces that transform the shape.

A corner section turns a straight sofa into an inviting L-shape. Add another corner at the opposite end and you can create a wonderfully sociable U-shape.

A chaise offers somewhere to stretch out with a book or curl up at the end of the day. Because it isn't fixed to one side forever, it can often be moved if your room changes.

The footstool is perhaps the most versatile piece of all. It can be used as an ottoman, an extra seat when friends visit, or pushed against the sofa whenever you fancy putting your feet up.

Because every piece shares the same proportions, seat height and cushioning, the finished sofa feels beautifully considered from every angle.

Finding the right shape

The best layout depends entirely on how you use your room.

A 2 or 3 seater is perfect for smaller sitting rooms, studies or cosy corners.

An L-shaped sofa works beautifully in family spaces, helping to define the seating area while keeping the room feeling open.

If you have more space, a U-shaped arrangement creates somewhere everyone naturally gathers. It is ideal for entertaining, family film nights and long conversations.

The lovely thing is that none of these arrangements have to stay exactly the same forever. You can add another section, swap the chaise to the opposite side or introduce a footstool whenever your needs change.

Removable covers

One of our favourite features of the Coco Modular collection is its loose covers.

Each cover slips off its individual section, making cleaning wonderfully straightforward. It also gives you the freedom to refresh your sofa over the years.

Perhaps you choose a lighter linen for summer, then something richer and more textured for the colder months. Or perhaps, years from now, you simply fancy a completely different colour.

Rather than replacing the sofa, you can simply give it a new look.

Made just for you

Every one of our modular piece is made to order rather than taken from stock.

That means your chosen fabric, piping, cushion fillings and finishing details are carried beautifully across every section, whether you are creating a compact 2 seater or a generous family-sized arrangement.

The result is a sofa that feels thoughtfully made as one complete piece, no matter how many sections it includes.

Planning your sofa

Before choosing your configuration, it is worth spending a little time thinking about both your room and the way you live in it.

Start by measuring the space, including windows, doorways, walkways and anything the sofa will need to sit around.

Then think about how the room is used. Is it somewhere for quiet evenings with a book, busy family life, or entertaining friends at the weekend?

Once you know how you use the room, choosing the right layout becomes much simpler.

And if you are unsure, we are always happy to help. Send us the measurements of your room, or even a photograph at sofas@sophieconran.com and we can suggest a configuration that makes the very best use of your space.
