Your questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about ordering, customising, and living with a Sophie Conran sofa. If you cannot find your answer here, we are always happy to help.

Lead times

What is the standard lead time?

Typically 8 to 10 weeks from the date your order is placed, unless the fabric you have chosen is temporarily out of stock.

I need the sofa by a specific date. Can you help?

If stock allows, yes. We have an "Available Now" selection of sofas ready to ship sooner, and we can sometimes expedite production on bespoke orders. Let us know your deadline and we will see what is possible.

Can I pay to speed up my order?

Yes. We offer an expedite service for an additional fee, which moves your order to the front of the workshop queue.

Can I hold delivery if I am on holiday or not ready?

Absolutely. We can schedule delivery around your availability. If your house is not quite ready, we can hold the sofa for a short period or arrange shipment to a storage facility of your choice.

The fabric I want is out of stock. How long will I have to wait?

Fabric delays do happen from time to time. We can either wait for the restock, or suggest a similar alternative that is in stock so your delivery date stays on track. We will always give you the choice.

Access and split frames

I live in an upper-floor flat with a small lift. Will the sofa fit?

Almost certainly. We can build most models with a "split frame", which means the sofa is made in two halves, carried up separately, and bolted together inside your home. You will not see the join once it is assembled.

I have a narrow doorway or a tight corner. Do I need a split frame?

Send us a short video of your access route and we will advise. If it is tight, we strongly recommend the split frame option to guarantee entry.

How much does a split frame cost?

It is typically an additional £400 (UK) or $500 (US) to cover the extra production time and hardware involved.

Can I remove the split frame option to save money?

Only if you are absolutely sure of your access. For example, if you are shipping to a warehouse with a loading dock, we can remove it to save you the cost. But if there is any doubt, it is always worth keeping.

Will the join be visible on a split frame sofa?

No. The upholstery is designed to cover the connection points completely, so the finished sofa looks exactly the same as a standard-frame version.

Is a split frame useful during a renovation?

It can be. If the room is not finished yet, or if you think you might need to move the sofa to a different room (such as a basement) later on, a split frame makes that much easier.

Can you do a split frame on a sofa bed?

Yes, we can split the frame on sofa beds as well. The mechanism adds significant weight, which makes the split frame especially useful for getting sofa beds upstairs.

Can you verify my doorway width from a photograph?

We can give a good estimate from a photo, but we always recommend measuring the narrowest point yourself with a tape measure. That way there are no surprises on delivery day.

Fabrics and care

I have dogs and muddy paws. Which fabric is best?

We would steer you away from "dry clean only" linens and towards our stain-resistant velvets or the English Garden collection, which are more durable and often machine washable. Let us know about your household and we will find the right match.

Is contrast piping machine washable?

Not always. Even if the main fabric is washable, a contrast velvet trim may need dry cleaning. It is worth checking the specific swatch details when choosing your combination.

Can I supply my own fabric?

Yes, we accept Customer's Own Material (COM). You purchase the fabric yourself and ship it to our workshop. We will tell you exactly how much yardage you need.

Are there any rules about using my own fabric?

If the fabric has a high polyester content, we may need to make the sofa as a fixed cover (fully upholstered) rather than loose cover to comply with UK fire safety regulations. We will let you know once we see the fabric specification.

Can I order a spare set of covers?

Yes, at any time. It is a little cheaper to order them at the same time as the sofa, since we can cut from the same batch of fabric, but we can make them whenever you need.

I am worried about the fabric colour matching my room. Can you help?

We can send you free swatches so you can see the colour in your own light. If you share a photograph of your room, we are happy to offer advice on which fabrics and tones would work well.

What happens if I damage the fabric badly, for instance, a paint spill?

Do not panic. We can usually manufacture a replacement cover for the specific damaged section, or for the whole sofa if needed. That is one of the great advantages of loose covers.

Do you have a white fabric that is practical to live with?

We do. We recommend washable linens or performance fabrics if you love the look of a white sofa but have children, pets, or simply a busy household.

International orders

Do you ship to the United States?

Yes, regularly. We use a specialist White Glove delivery service (Deliveright) that covers most of the US.

How does VAT work for US orders?

You do not pay UK VAT (20%). We remove it from the price, which often helps offset the shipping cost significantly.

How does VAT work for European orders?

We remove UK VAT, but you will be liable for your local VAT upon import (for example, 19% in Germany). We help with the paperwork to make the process as smooth as possible.

Can you ship to a warehouse instead of my home?

Yes. This is often easier and more cost-effective, particularly if the warehouse has a loading dock.

How long does shipping to the US take?

Production is the standard 8 to 10 weeks, followed by approximately 4 to 6 weeks of ocean freight.

Does the White Glove service in the US include assembly?

Yes. The delivery team will unpack, assemble (including bolting together split frames), place the sofa where you want it, and remove all packaging.

Can I order from Australia or elsewhere?

We can ship globally. Freight costs to some destinations, such as Australia, are higher, but we are happy to provide a quote.

Can I get a VAT refund if I export the sofa myself?

It is cleaner and simpler if we handle the export directly, as we can remove the VAT at source rather than you needing to reclaim it afterwards.

Looking after your sofa

There is a smell coming from my new sofa. Is that normal?

New furniture can have a faint scent from the natural materials and finishes used during production, but it should dissipate within a few days. If it persists, please get in touch and we will look into it.

A leg arrived broken. What do I do?

Send us a photograph and we will dispatch a replacement leg straight away.

The fabric looks slightly different from the sample I received. Why?

Dye lots can vary slightly between batches, which is completely normal for natural fabrics. The overall character and quality will be the same.

You have sent the wrong cover. What should I do?

Let us know straight away. We will check our records and dispatch the correct cover immediately.

The delivery team missed the scheduled slot. What happens now?

Contact us and we will chase the courier immediately and keep you updated until the delivery is rescheduled.

Will you still stock my fabric in five years if I need new covers?

We cannot guarantee that a specific mill will continue to produce a particular fabric, but we keep your measurements on file. That means we can make new covers in any fabric that is available at the time, whether it is the original or something entirely new.

Can I buy a replacement cover for just one cushion?

Yes. We can make individual cushion covers rather than a full set, so you only pay for what you need.

Is the sofa guaranteed?

We stand behind the quality of our frames and construction. If anything goes wrong with the structure, we will put it right.

What if the foam sags over time?

High-quality foam should retain its shape for many years. If it does eventually soften, the cushion interiors are fully replaceable without needing to replace the whole sofa.

What is the frame made of?

Solid hardwood, usually beech or birch, with traditional joinery for long-lasting strength.

What suspension do you use?

Depending on the model, we use either traditional hand-tied coil springs or high-quality webbing. Both are chosen for comfort and durability.

Are the covers fully removable?

Yes, the majority of our range is loose cover, which means you can remove the covers for cleaning or swap them for a completely new look. Some models are also available as fixed cover if you prefer a more tailored finish.
